Free recoil assumes the rifle recoils unimpeded in a straight line (no shooter mass absorbing it). Powder gas escape velocity is commonly estimated between 4700–5400 fps for rifle propellants; use the manufacturer’s figure if published.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator uses the standard free-recoil (momentum-conservation) formula: recoil velocity equals bullet momentum plus propellant gas momentum, divided by rifle weight. Recoil energy then follows directly from that velocity and the rifle’s weight. This is the same method used in reloading manuals and by most published recoil tables — it assumes the rifle is completely free to move (no shooter mass absorbing recoil, no muzzle brake redirecting gas), so it represents the upper bound on felt recoil for a given load and rifle weight.

Why Rifle Weight Matters So Much

Because recoil energy scales with the square of recoil velocity, and recoil velocity is inversely proportional to rifle weight, small changes in rifle weight have an outsized effect on felt recoil. Adding a pound to a light mountain rifle reduces recoil energy far more than adding the same pound to an already-heavy target rifle. This is why magnum cartridges are almost always paired with heavier rifles — it’s the most effective lever for keeping recoil manageable without changing the load.
